Behold the mercy of God, who justifies not the proud but the contrite. In the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector, Christ warns against trusting in works or boasting in sin. Like the tax collector, we come before the Father with empty hands, pleading only the propitiation of Christ, who exalts the humble and delivers sinners by His grace.
Eleventh Sunday after Trinity—Justified by God’s Mercy, Not by Our Works
Yet those are the two people we have: the outwardly pious, yet inwardly deceived, and the outwardly sinful, but inwardly contrite, trusting in the mercy of God. And then Jesus’ warning at the end: everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.

Ninth Sunday after Trinity—Faithful Stewardship and Eternal Friends
Everything we call ours in this life—our body and soul, our family, our money, our possessions, our time—isn’t really ours at all. It belongs to God, who created us and provides for us even to this day. We are stewards, not owners. And our Lord calls us to use these gifts shrewdly now for what endures forever.

Fourth Sunday after Trinity—Mercy, Forgiveness, and the Christian Life
We Christians cannot tolerate the thought of grabbing our neighbor by the neck and demanding payment when our Lord and Master has shown such mercy and forgiveness and release from an unimaginable debt to us. And finally, we Christians cannot entertain the idea that we would graduate or retire from loving and serving our neighbor according to our stations in life. Thanks be to God that Jesus never spoke that way about us when we were dead.
Third Sunday after Trinity—He Welcomes Sinners
He welcomes the sinner—no matter what they’ve done and no matter how long they’ve done it—to hear that word of Law and Gospel. Always saying to us: ‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me’ (Revelation 3:20).
J.S. Bach’s Sunday Cantata: Third Sunday after Trinity
JESUS
Yes, I come and restore
You with my gaze of grace;
Your soul, it shall live
And not die;
Here, out of this wound-cavity [in my rib],
You shall inherit
Healing/salvation through [my blood,] this juice of the grape;
No, ah no, you are chosen [for salvation].
Yes, ah yes, I love you.
Escape, you worries; disappear, you pain.
Yes, I come and restore
You with my gaze of grace.
